Note: The character 的 is what they call 多音字 duōyīnzì, literally "many sound word". The first and most common sound is "de", followed by dī, dí, and dì. The most common pronunciation is a possessive particle and is as follows: 我的 wǒde (mine), 他的 tāde (his), 你的 nǐde (yours), 我们的 wǒmende (ours) 他们的 tāmende (theirs). The less common pronunciations in word examples: 打的 dǎdī (to catch a cab), 的确 díquè (really; indeed), and  目的 mùdì (purpose; aim; goal; target; objective). In linguistics this phenomenon is called Heteronym. Now you might have noticed that the "的's" that have appeared in this blog are mostly the first and most common pronunciation "de". Why then is it written "di" and sung "di"? The "di" pronunciation is also more formal and originated from the old capital of Nanjing's （南京的）pronunciation of Mandarin. Thus it is sung in music, and spoken in poetry.
